INTRODUCTION

We’ve created these guidelines to help you prepare your artwork for printing at AA Labels. Following them ensures your labels look perfect every time!

PRINTING DIGITAL IMAGES

Digital images look different on screen than in print. Here’s how to get the best results:

Types of Digital Images

1. Vector Images

  • Logos, line art, and illustrations.
  • Can be resized without losing quality.

2. Raster Images

  • Photographs and most JPEG images.
  • Made of pixels — enlarging them reduces quality.

For labels, raster images should be minimum 200 dpi. For larger prints (A4, A3), use 300 dpi.

Minimum Raster Image Sizes for Print

Approximate minimum dimensions, in pixels, for raster images to print at Label or publication quality at standard A paper sizes.

Print Size

Dimensions (mm)

Minimum Image Size (Pixels)

A6

105 x 148

1,000 x 1,000

A5

148 x 210

1,500 x 2,000

A4

210 x 279

2,000 x 3,000

A3

279 x 420

3,000 x 4,200

When Not to Use Screen Graphics

  • Avoid web images, clipart, or screenshots—they are usually 72 dpi and print poorly.
  • Enlarging low-resolution images will make them blurry.

Microsoft Office Artwork

Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) need special attention before printing:

  • Check Page Setup: Use standard UK page sizes (A4 or A3).
  • Use Line/Page Breaks: Prevent auto-reformatting issues.
  • Use Standard Fonts: Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman. Avoid unusual fonts.
  • Avoid Web Graphics: Only use high-resolution images.

PDF & Graphics Files

PDF

PDF is the preferred format for printing:

  • Embeds all fonts and graphics.
  • Choose high/press quality and 300 dpi.
  • Other formats (JPEG, TIFF, EPS) can be used but may reduce quality or file manageability.

Important: Converting low-quality images to PDF does not improve their resolution.

Professional DTP Software

AI

Programs like Illustrator, InDesign, and QuarkXPress are ideal for print-ready artwork:

1. Colour Mode

  • CMYK For printing.
  • RGB Screen only; convert to CMYK before submission.
  • Pantone Use for spot colours only. Avoid mixing with CMYK unless printing full colour.

2. Image Resolution

  • Minimum 250 dpi for raster images at the printed size.

Bleeds

  • Extend images 3mm beyond the label edge to avoid white borders.
  • Check templates for gaps (approx. 5mm “gutter”).
...

COLOUR GAMUT

...
  • RGB and CMYK have different colour ranges.
  • Bright RGB colours may look dull when printed.
  • Convert artwork to CMYK to ensure accurate printed colours.

Repeat Orders & Data Protection

  • Artwork Retention: We store artwork for up to 2 years for repeat orders.
  • Data Security: Artwork is linked to the customer account. It cannot be shared or used by AA Labels without your consent.

Tips for a Perfect Print

  • Start with high-resolution images.
  • Use vector graphics for logos and text whenever possible.
  • Embed all fonts in PDFs.
  • Always check bleeds and margins.
  • Convert RGB images to CMYK before submission.
